Affiliated Blind of Louisiana Training Center

iCanConnect in Louisiana is administered by Affiliated Blind of Louisiana, Inc. (ABL).

Founded in 1983, ABL expanded its reach thanks to the efforts of John Lemaire, a former president of the board of the National Federation of the Blind. Today, ABL serves people in Louisiana who are blind or deaf-blind, helping them lead independent lives, get jobs, and integrate into the community.

Through Affiliated Blind of Louisiana, people with combined hearing and vision loss are able to apply to the National Deaf-Blind Equipment Distribution Program and receive communications technology and expert one-on-one training. The program is changing lives in Louisiana.

Consumer Turns Trainer

Jackie Broussard of Lafayette, Louisiana has Usher Syndrome, a genetic condition characterized by deafness and progressive vision loss.  She received a portable braille reader and one-on-one training through iCanConnect.

Jackie became such an accomplished advocate for technology that she was invited to become a trainer for iCanConnect.  She is now helping other people who have significant hearing and vision loss tap into the power of communications technology.

“This technology gets people excited to be in touch with other people and in touch with the world.”
